How This Oil Is Made

Before we get into all the amazing benefits Jojoba oil can offer, let’s take a look at how this oil is actually produced.

Fun Fact: It’s actually not an oil… It’s a wax.

Here in Arizona, where our apothecary is located, it’s the perfect climate for this desert shrub to grow into beautiful and healthy plants. That is why I have a few bushes in the back of my shop!

What you see as Jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax that is extracted from the plant’s seeds.

In the dry, hot, Arizona sun, the seeds fall naturally to the ground. These seeds tend to look a lot like coffee beans, but that’s where the similarities end.

After the seeds fall to the ground, you can gather them up and extract the waxy liquids – what we call Jojoba oil. This involves pouring the seeds into an expeller press or seed press and this will separate the “meal” or shell of the seeds from the waxy liquid that looks like oil.

The Amazing Benefits Of Jojoba Oil

Native Americans and indigenous North American tribes used Jojoba oil as a skin-healing salve. Scientifically, if you compare the chemical structure of Jojoba oil to the natural oils on our skin, you’ll see why it’s so effective.

This is one of the only plant oils that chemically resembles the natural oils on our skin.  It is such a close match that it’s hard to tell them apart.

There are also some forms of vitamin E in it and they eliminate free radicals which means it helps fight signs of aging!

Jojoba oil is antimicrobial (fights germs), antifungal (fights fungus), and naturally moisturizing. Plus, it is deeply hydrating which is something you definitely need if you live in the desert. It easily absorbs into your skin and helps soothe and soften it at the same time.

There are so many other benefits to your skin and hair, so let’s look closer at them!

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for Skin

Since Jojoba oil matches the chemical compound of our skin’s natural oils, it’s a fantastic way to nourish your skin and help it heal.

I’ve had so many people come into the shop and ask: What are the benefits of jojoba oil for acne?

Well, since it has antimicrobial properties and is anti-inflammatory, it’s great at treating those acne breakouts. If you use it as a moisturizer after cleansing your skin, it will promote the regrowth of healthier skin and help to prevent future breakouts.

It’s also a wonderful way to help your skin heal after a burn or sunburn. Applying some oil to your burn can reduce the amount of skin peeling you might experience.

You can use Jojoba oil all over on your body, from your face to your hands to your feet!

Here are some of the best products (with jojoba oil) to add to your skincare routine:

  • Prickly Pear Rejuvenating Serum – Use as a moisturizer after washing your face. It smells refreshing and will help your skin feel smooth and healthy.
  • Mature Skin Cream – The ultimate anti-aging face cream.
  • Original Body Butter – This thick body butter melts into your skin and nourishes it with natural oils.
  • Healing Creosote Salve – If you suffer from skin burns, psoriasis, or other painful skin problems, use this thick and healing salve. The Jojoba oil works with the Creosote to help repair your skin.
  • Chocolate Rose Soap – As you wash away the dirt from the day, use a soap that has jojoba oil in it. Don’t just scrub away your skin’s natural oils along with the dirt! The jojoba oil adds a protective layer just like your skin’s oil to help it stay soft and healthy.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for Hair

Jojoba is also fantastic for your hair too! It’s known to promote a healthy scalp and minimize itchiness and flakes. Plus, it can help stimulate hair growth as well.

For men, one of my (and my husband’s) favorite suggestions is to apply it on facial hair.

The Desert Rain Creosote Beard Oil naturally softens facial hair and even moisturizes the skin on your face underneath it all. Plus, if you or the men in your life are struggling to grow a thicker beard, this could help with the growth process.

Have you heard of “beardruff?” It’s just like dandruff on your scalp but instead, it happens on your face. This beard oil with creosote calms the itch and treats those annoying dead skin flakes as well.

While men can use it on their “beardruff”, others use Jojoba oil on their scalp if it’s itchy from dandruff. Many times, that itching and flaky skin could just be from a dry scalp.

I recommend using a few drops of our Organic Jojoba oil right on your head after shampooing it or you can add a few drops of it in your favorite mild conditioner. It can strengthen your hair, preventing hair loss and even encouraging more hair growth!
